Security Public Storage

Self storage is often necessary when you’re transitioning between homes, downsizing, or deploying for active duty. While factors like location, access hours, and cleanliness matter, security is the highest priority. That’s why we’ve invested in a comprehensive storage unit security system, including individual storage unit alarms on every unit at all locations.

You may wonder how these storage unit alarms work and if you still need a lock. The answer is: absolutely. Individual alarms provide an extra layer of protection, alerting our on-site managers immediately if there’s unauthorized access. However, the storage unit alarm is only part of the equation. You still need a high-quality, tamper-resistant storage unit lock to secure your door physically.

At Security Public Storage, peace of mind comes from knowing your belongings are secure. When you rent with us, you’re not just getting a place to store your items; you’re choosing a facility that prioritizes your security with the best storage unit locks, storage unit alarms, and an advanced security system you can trust.

How Do Individual Door Alarms for Storage Units Work?

Every Security Public Storage customer is assigned a unique personal access code. When you enter that code at the facility gate, the alarm on your unit is temporarily disabled. If someone attempts to access your unit without using the code, the alarm will trigger loudly enough to be heard throughout the property and will immediately alert our on-site managers.

Unlike a traditional visible lock, these alarms are built into the unit doors and connected to our storage unit security system across the facility. This means your belongings are protected around the clock by technology and our professional staff.

Choosing the Right Storage Unit Locks and Alarm Systems

Each Security Public Storage unit includes an individual door alarm, but you are responsible for choosing a high-quality lock for your storage unit. Not all locks offer the same level of protection, so it’s important to choose the right storage unit lock type.

  • Disc Locks (Round Locks): Our top recommendation. Stainless-steel, laser-welded disc locks are designed to resist tampering and can’t be removed with bolt cutters because the hasp is inaccessible. We sell these types of locks at our Security Public Storage locations, or you can find them at most hardware stores.
  • Cylinder Locks: Another excellent choice, cylinder locks are extremely secure but require a specific size to fit storage unit doors. Check with your Security Public Storage location before purchasing.
  • Closed-Shackle Padlocks: These are stronger than ordinary padlocks thanks to their shorter, thicker shackle, which makes them harder to cut through.

Ordinary padlocks may seem convenient but are not the best option for a storage unit. They can be cut easily, leaving your belongings vulnerable.

Storage Unit Locks to Avoid

Some locks simply don’t provide enough protection:

  • Combination Locks: These are the easiest to break into, and they also come with the risk of forgetting your combination.
  • Bike Locks or Multi-Combination Locks: These locks are designed for other purposes and offer little resistance to tampering.

Spending a few extra dollars on a high-quality lock for your storage unit is a small investment compared to the value of protecting your belongings.

Why Use a Round Lock for Your Storage Unit?

A round lock for a storage unit, also known as a disc lock, has become the gold standard for storage security. Its circular design makes it very difficult for thieves to reach the hasp with bolt cutters, which is one of the most common break-in methods.

Constructed from stainless steel and laser-welded for strength, disc locks offer durability and resistance against cutting, prying, and drilling. When paired with Security Public Storage’s individual door alarms for storage units, round locks give you unmatched protection and peace of mind.
